SpaceX, the Hawthorne company led by Elon Musk, successfully launched its first rocket of the year Friday morning, Jan. 11, and landed it back down again flawlessly on an unmanned ship located off the coast of Santa Barbara.
The Falcon 9 rocket out of Vandenberg Air Force Base blasted off at 7:31 a.m. through a coastal cloud layer that obscured much of the launch for viewers in Southern California. The rocket was more visible for those closer to the launch site in Lompoc.
