For even those who live in Southern California, Thousand Oaks may be an unknown. The people who live there — I did for 11 years — prefer it that way. I always considered it the Southland’s best-kept secret and happily joined the conspiracy to keep its idyllic qualities under wraps.
But now, after a gunman enters a cowboy bar (yes, a cowboy bar about a half-hour from Malibu) everyone in the nation is hearing the name Thousand Oaks and wondering what kind of community is it.
Politically, it’s easy to say it’s everytown. It’s Parkland. And Pittsburgh. And San Bernardino.
