Fall is traditionally the season that Oscar contenders hit the theaters.
But for just about a month this time around, the Academy’s board of governors tempted filmgoers with the idea that it was creating an Oscar category for “outstanding achievement in popular film.”
Alas, that was not to be as the Academy said it would scrap the idea for this year, apparently unable to come up with criteria for what that meant. Sorry, “Wreck-It Ralph 2.” You’ll probably have to be content with competing in the animation category.
