Don’t confuse maintenance with improvements

Homeownership comes with responsibilities and expenses, above and beyond what you paid for the home.

You’ve got property taxes, homeowners insurance, and possibly Homeowners Association (HOA) dues to pay. In addition, you have to mow the lawn, trim the trees once in a while, throw some chemicals into the pool on a regular basis, and keep the ants out of the house.

Just don’t confuse home maintenance with home improvements when it comes time to sell your house.

For instance, painting your home after living in it for 15 years is not considered an improvement.
