Senators misleading public on Prop. 57: Letters

Re “Dangerous flaws with sex offenders” (Opinion, April 21):

We welcome Sens. Patricia Bates and Janet Nguyen’s recent interest in improving California’s criminal justice system, but scaring and misleading the public about Proposition 57 won’t make our communities safer.

To be clear, “hundreds, maybe thousands, of sex criminals” are not being released as a result of a recent lower court ruling. In fact, the state is preparing to appeal this decision and will fight to preserve the intent of California’s voters — who approved Prop. 57 by a 2-to-1 margin.
