LOS ANGELES — De’Anthony Melton confirmed the news when he sent a text message to the USC basketball team’s group chat.
By Thursday afternoon, the players knew his fate, bringing an end to a monthslong saga.
Melton, the Trojans’ sophomore who in September was first linked in the FBI’s probe into bribery and corruption in college basketball, had been suspended by the university for the rest of the season.
In an announcement, USC cited its internal investigation that uncovered “extra benefits, primarily to a close family friend.”
It was a gut punch to teammates.
